Welcome to the academic portfolio and professional website of Matthew Elías “Matt” Garley.

I am a sociolinguist, and my scholarly work focuses on quantitative (corpus) and qualitative analyses of language contact and orthography, particularly in the domains of subculture and computer-mediated communication. I am an Associate Professor specializing in Linguistics in the Department of English at York College/CUNY in Queens, NY and doctoral faculty in Linguistics at the Graduate Center/CUNY in Manhattan.

I graduated with a Ph.D. in Linguistics in August 2012 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Department of Linguistics, and have previously worked at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) School of Language & Literature (2013), and the Murray State University Department of English and Philosophy (2013-2014).
